Travel photography from Costa del Sol, where sun-drenched beaches, whitewashed villages, and Andalusian light make Spain's southern coast one of the Mediterranean's most rewarding destinations.
Costa del Sol – Shooting Andalusia’s Sun Coast
The Costa del Sol stretches for over 150 kilometres along the southernmost edge of mainland Spain, from the Strait of Gibraltar in the west to the cliffs of Nerja in the east. The name — Coast of the Sun — is no marketing invention: the region averages more than 300 days of sunshine a year, and that abundance of light is precisely what makes it compelling for photography.
The Villages and Towns
Behind the resort strip of Torremolinos and Marbella lie the inland pueblos blancos — whitewashed villages clinging to steep hillsides where the light bounces between narrow lime-washed walls with extraordinary intensity. Mijas Pueblo, perched above the coast at 430 metres, rewards early-morning visits when the streets are quiet and the low sun rakes across the facades. Further east, Nerja’s Balcón de Europa offers dramatic views of the sea framed by palm trees and the Sierra Almijara.
Photography Highlights
The coast faces south, so the best shooting window runs from first light until mid-morning, when the sun is low enough to cast long shadows across the beaches and promenades. The old quarter of Málaga — the capital of the province — provides excellent architectural subjects: the Roman theatre, the Alcazaba fortress, and the 16th-century cathedral all photograph well in the warm directional light of the hour after sunrise. Boat harbours at Estepona and Fuengirola offer reflections and nautical texture at the golden hour before sunset.
Getting There
Málaga Airport (AGP) is one of Spain’s busiest international airports with direct flights from across Europe. The Cercanías commuter rail connects the airport to Málaga city centre in 12 minutes, and onwards along the coast to Fuengirola. A hire car is the most practical way to explore the inland villages and the full length of the coast.
