Chongqing – The Mountain City
Built across steep hills at the meeting point of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Chongqing is one of China’s largest and most vertical cities. Its tangle of bridges, stairways, monorails, and towers stacked over the water has earned it the nickname “Mountain City”, and a reputation as one of the most visually striking urban landscapes in the country.
Hongyadong & the Riverfront
Clinging to the cliffs above the Jialing River, Hongyadong is a stilted complex of traditional diaojiaolou-style buildings that glows gold after dark. Along the riverbanks, the convergence of the two great rivers frames sweeping views of the Jiefangbei business district and its illuminated skyline.
Layers of the City
Chongqing rewards exploration on foot, from narrow lanes and old neighbourhoods to elevated walkways and viewpoints that reveal the city’s many levels. The mix of misty river light, dense high-rises, and bustling street life makes it a uniquely atmospheric place to photograph.
