Beijing Zoo – Wildlife in the Imperial Capital
Founded in 1906 during the late Qing Dynasty as the Garden of Mindful Happiness (Wanshou Yuan), Beijing Zoo is one of the oldest zoological gardens in China. Covering 89 hectares in the Xicheng District, the park combines traditional Chinese garden design—complete with historic pavilions, lotus ponds, and streams—with extensive wildlife conservation facilities.
The Giant Panda Hall
The Giant Panda Hall is the central highlight of Beijing Zoo. Designed with spacious outdoor courtyards and indoor viewing areas, it houses several Giant Pandas. Photographing these iconic bears as they feed on fresh bamboo and climb wooden structures offers captivating wildlife portraits.
Rare Chinese Species & Classical Grounds
Beyond the pandas, the zoo is home to several rare native species, including golden snub-nosed monkeys, South China tigers, and Pere David’s deer. The grounds themselves feature historic Qing architecture, stone bridges, and mature trees, creating a scenic backdrop throughout the park.
